Program Description
This instructional program focuses upon development of listening, reading, writing, speaking (conversation), and grammar at all levels of the curriculum. Courses are designed in such a manner that skills are developed sequentially, with the English elements identified and taught in order of difficulty to include those necessary for English language success in the beginning, low intermediate, and high intermediate levels. Included within the program's interactive guided methodology are a combination of lecture/laboratory, class discussion, and group activities designed to provide English language skills as well as cultural transference.
Course Content
ESL100 Reading English as a Second Language
(100 Instruction Hours)
Course is designed for nonnative speakers of English. Reading comprehension skills are developed through the use of vocabulary work, guided reading activities and discussion. Reading material is intellectually stimulating but not beyond the students’ level of comprehension.
ESL101 Writing and Grammar for ESL
(100 Instruction Hours)
This course is provides non-native students of English with comprehensive practices in Writing and English grammar. It focuses on syntax, continued vocabulary development, reading, listening comprehension, speaking and pronunciation skills and writing multiple-paragraph compositions that demonstrate organization of ideas, use of a thesis statement, and supportive elements. Intensive grammar instruction that supports academic writing skills is emphasized. This course contributes to skills needed in mainstream classes and universities.
